EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the landing of William of Orange with his army at Torbay, Devon on 5 November 1688. William, a Protestant leader from Holland, was invited by English notables to overthrow the Catholic King James II and assume the throne. Known as the Glorious Revolution, this invasion marked a turning point for England. In this image, we see William's army disembarking from their ships onto the sandy beach. The soldiers stand tall and determined, ready to fight for their cause. Horses can be seen alongside them, adding an air of power and strength to the scene. The significance of this event cannot be overstated. With minimal bloodshed, William successfully deposed James II who fled to France while he himself was crowned as William III of Great Britain and Ireland in 1689. He ruled jointly with his wife Mary II until her death in 1694. This print is not just a depiction of military conquest but also represents religious tensions during that time period. It symbolizes the triumph of Protestantism over Catholicism and highlights how religion played a significant role in shaping political events. As we gaze upon this historical image, we are reminded of the bravery and determination displayed by those involved in this rebellion against King James II. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be overcome through unity and conviction.
