EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming 19th-century print titled "The Water Babies" artist John Tenniel captures a delightful scene of friendship and camaraderie between two powerful nations. Mrs Britannia turns to Madam France with admiration as she remarks on the heartwarming sight of their children, little Napoleon and little John Bull, playing together harmoniously. The image symbolizes the amicable relationship between the two countries during that time. The print is set against the backdrop of bathing machines lined up along the shore, evoking a sense of nostalgia for seaside holidays in Victorian England.
