View of Papenberkh Island and Rat's Island,
EDITORS COMMENTS
an enchanting print from the 19th century, is a captivating representation of two small islands in the Pacific Ocean as depicted by Russian artist Ivan Vasil'evich Chesky. This image is part of an atlas published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813, which includes 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and official artist of the Kruzenshtern expedition. The Kruzenshtern expedition, led by Captain I.F. Kruzenshtern, was the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe, taking place between 1803 and 1806. This atlas documents the voyage and showcases various views of the lands and peoples encountered during the expedition, including Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the Kurile Islands. In this particular print, we see the islands of Papenberkh and Rat's Island. Papenberkh, also known as Kunashir Island, is located between Hokkaido, Japan, and the Russian mainland. Rat's Island, or Etorofu, is the northernmost of the four main islands of the Kurile chain. The islands are depicted with their rocky shores, rolling hills, and dense forests. The print's intricate engraving showcases the meeting of frontiers between Russia and Japan, as well as the rich natural beauty of the Pacific. The boats in the foreground add a sense of scale and activity to the scene, while the figures of people in the background provide a glimpse into the lives of those who inhabited these islands during the early 19th century. This historic print is a testament to the spirit of exploration and the cultural exchange that took place during the age of sail. It is a valuable addition to any collection of maritime art or historical documents, and a reminder of the vast and diverse world that was discovered and documented during this period.
