Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and author Maxim Gorky, Moscow, USSR, 1931
Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and author Maxim Gorky, Moscow, USSR, 1931. Gorky (1868-1936) was one of the pioneers of socialist realism in literature. He was a fierce opponent of the Tsarist regime and became involved with the Bolsheviks after the 1905 Revolution. In 1932 Stalin (1879-1953) persuaded Gorky to return to the Soviet Union permanently from Italy, where he had been living because he was suffering from tuberculosis. As Stalinist repression increased within the USSR, Gorky was placed under house arrest in 1934. It has been suggested that his death two years later came at the hands of agents of the Soviet secret police and security organisation, the NKVD. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in Moscow, USSR, in 1931. The image features Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and renowned author Maxim Gorky engaged in deep conversation. Gorky, a pioneer of socialist realism in literature, had been living abroad due to his battle with tuberculosis until Stalin convinced him to return permanently to the Soviet Union from Italy. However, as the grip of Stalinist repression tightened within the country, Gorky found himself placed under house arrest just three years later. Tragically, it has been suggested that his untimely death two years after this photograph was taken may have come at the hands of agents from the notorious Soviet secret police and security organization known as the NKVD. The black and white composition adds an air of gravity to this powerful image. Both men are dressed impeccably; their attire reflecting their roles as influential figures within politics and literature during this tumultuous era. Their intense discussion hints at important matters being deliberated upon - perhaps topics concerning revolution or communism. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of the complex interplay between art and politics during one of history's most transformative periods. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder not only of these two remarkable individuals but also of the profound impact they had on shaping 20th-century Russia through their contributions to literature and political ideology.
