Scene from "Harlequin and Johnnys Ride", at Astley s, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Scene from " Harlequin and Johnnys Ride", at Astley s, 1844. London stage production at Astleys Royal Amphitheatre. The harlequinade here consisted of a version of " Johnny Gilpins Ride; or, the Black Witch of Edmonton, " with a sort of necromantic opening, followed by some comic scenes of average merit; the main incident being the celebrated Citizens ride, the role filled by " the popular equestrian, Mr. Wells"...The effect of the pantomime was, probably, somewhat anticipated by the first piece of the evening - " The Royal Fox- Hunt, " which is a veritable treat, and a cleverly managed spectacle throughout. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the London stage production of "Harlequin and Johnny's Ride" at Astley's Royal Amphitheatre in 1844. The harlequinade presented here is a unique adaptation of "Johnny Gilpin's Ride; or, the Black Witch of Edmonton" featuring an enchanting opening followed by comedic scenes of average quality. The highlight of this performance is undoubtedly the renowned Citizens ride, skillfully executed by the popular equestrian Mr. Wells. The pantomime's impact may have been somewhat foreshadowed by the evening's first piece, "The Royal Fox-Hunt" which proved to be an absolute delight with its cleverly orchestrated spectacle. This image was originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1844, Volume V. In this snapshot from the 19th century theatrical world, we witness actors and horses coming together on stage to create a whimsical atmosphere filled with laughter and entertainment. The unknown creator has beautifully captured a moment that showcases both talent and silliness as performers bring their characters to life. As we gaze upon this historic engraving, we are transported back in time to experience Victorian-era theatre at its finest. It serves as a reminder of how drama and comedy were cherished forms of escapism during that period. This print stands as a testament to British culture and artistic expression during one of history's most fascinating centuries for performing arts enthusiasts worldwide.
