Ponting Developing a Plate in the Dark Room, c1910–1913, (1913)
Ponting Developing a Plate in the Dark Room, c1910– 1913, (1913). Professional photographer Herbert George Ponting, FRGS, (1870-1935), the expeditions Camera artist and cinematographer. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dedicated work of professional photographer Herbert George Ponting during the Terra Nova Expedition in 1910-1913. As the official camera artist and cinematographer, Ponting played a crucial role in documenting British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. In this particular image, taken between 1910 and 1913, Ponting can be seen developing a plate in the dark room. With his expertise and precision, he meticulously brings to life the frozen landscapes and courageous endeavors of Scott's team. The Terra Nova Expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to conduct scientific research. The diverse group of explorers included geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, physicists - each contributing their specialized knowledge to further our understanding of Antarctica. Tragically though, despite their valiant efforts and perseverance through treacherous conditions and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished on their return journey from the Pole. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with poignant diaries that revealed their heroic struggle for survival. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913. It serves as a powerful testament to both Ponting's artistic talent behind the lens and the indomitable spirit displayed by those who ventured into one of Earth's harshest environments in pursuit of discovery.
