EDITORS COMMENTS
Lucius Cary, 2nd Viscount Falkland (1610-1643): A poignant black and white engraving by Charles Turner, depicting the nobleman and politician, Lucius Cary, 2nd Viscount Falkland, who tragically lost his life during the English Civil War. The portrait, titled "Lucius, Viscount Falkland; Obit 1643," was published in Samuel Woodburn's "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second" in 1815. Born into the English aristocracy, Lucius Cary served as a Member of Parliament and was a committed Royalist. He distinguished himself in military engagements, most notably at the First Battle of Newbury in 1643. Tragically, Viscount Falkland was killed during this battle, marking a significant loss for the Royalist cause. In the portrait, Lucius Cary is depicted wearing the fashionable clothing of the 17th century, including a high-collared doublet adorned with intricate lace. The collar, known as a ruff, was a popular accessory among the nobility and was often worn as a sign of wealth and status. The portrait also captures the somber mood of the occasion, with the inscription "Obit 1643" serving as a stark reminder of the viscount's untimely demise. The portrait was created by the skilled hand of Cornelius Janssen van Ceulen, a Dutch engraver, and is a testament to the artistic talent of the time. The image not only serves as a historical record of a prominent figure in British history but also as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war.
