EDITORS COMMENTS
King George V of Great Britain (1865-1936), 1912. This print captures the regal presence of King George V, who reigned over Great Britain from 1910 to 1936. The artist Downey skillfully portrays the monarch seated in a grand chair, exuding an air of authority and wisdom. George V made significant contributions during his reign, including appointing Ramsay MacDonald as Britain's first Labour Prime Minister in 1924, marking a milestone for social progress. In addition, he introduced the tradition of broadcasting a Christmas message to the nation in 1932, fostering unity and connection among his people. Tragically, King George V succumbed to influenza on January 20th, 1936. His passing marked the end of an era but paved the way for his eldest son Edward to ascend to the throne. This historic photograph is taken from 'Imperial Cricket, ' a publication edited by P. F. Warner and published by The London and Counties Press Association Ltd in London back in 1912. It showcases not only King George V but also provides insight into British society during that time period. As we gaze upon this remarkable portrait today, we are reminded of King George V's enduring legacy as a beloved ruler who guided his country through times both prosperous and challenging.
