Inhabitants of the Country of the Chukchis, Northeast Coast of Asia, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled 'Inhabitants of the Country of the Chukchis, Northeast Coast of Asia,' is an ethnographic record of the indigenous people of the Chukchi region, located in the northeastern coast of Asia, during the 19th century. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, the expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The lithograph, created by the skilled hands of Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, depicts a group of Chukchi men and women, dressed in their traditional attire, gathered in a meeting or gathering. The men, with their distinctive hairstyles and facial hair, are shown wearing fur coats and trousers, while the women wear long, flowing skirts adorned with intricate designs. The image offers a glimpse into the daily life and cultural heritage of this indigenous community, which was a primary focus of the Russian scientific naval surveys of the first part of the 19th century. The lithograph, produced by the Frères Thierry publishing house and printed in lithotint, is a remarkable record of the Chukchi people and their way of life during a time when European exploration and contact with indigenous communities were shaping the world. The image is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Chukchi people and serves as an important historical document for scholars, anthropologists, and anyone interested in the history of the Arctic and indigenous peoples.
