Group After Winter in Igloo, 1912, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick

Group After Winter in Igloo, 1912, (1913). Northern Party after winter in snow cave: Priestley, Levick, Dickason, Browning and Abbott, looking dirty and dishevelled. Petty Officer George Abbot, Able seaman Harry Dickason, Petty officer Frank Browning, geologist Raymond Priestley, Lieutenant Victor Campbell and surgeon George Murray Levick were forced to overwinter in a cramped ice cave when pack ice prevented the Terra Nova from picking them up. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

Group After Winter in Igloo, 1912, (1913) - A Glimpse into the Harsh Realities of Antarctic Exploration

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment frozen in time from the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913. In this image, we see a group of brave men who have endured an arduous winter in a cramped ice cave. The faces of Petty Officer George Abbot, Able seaman Harry Dickason, Petty officer Frank Browning, geologist Raymond Priestley, Lieutenant Victor Campbell and surgeon George Murray Levick tell stories of resilience and determination. Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this expedition aimed to conquer the South Pole while conducting groundbreaking scientific research. However, their dreams were shattered when they arrived at their destination only to find that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there. Trapped by pack ice preventing their rescue ship from reaching them on time, these men faced unimaginable challenges during their overwintering period. The photograph reveals their disheveled appearance after months spent battling extreme cold and isolation. Sadly, Scott and his remaining team members succumbed to harsh conditions and dwindling supplies on their return journey. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with poignant diaries that documented both triumphs and tragedies. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit exhibited by these explorers who risked everything for knowledge and discovery in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. It stands as a testament to human perseverance against nature's harshest elements.
