EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Hall, Edinburgh Castle, stands as a testament to centuries of Scottish history and grandeur. This print captures the essence of this magnificent architectural masterpiece in all its glory. Constructed in 1434, the Magne Camere or Great Hall witnessed numerous significant events throughout history. In 1437, James II of Scotland was proclaimed King within these very walls. Almost two centuries later, in 1633, Charles I held his coronation banquet here, showcasing the hall's enduring importance. Even during times of political upheaval, such as in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell was entertained at Edinburgh Castle, the Great Hall remained a symbol of power and prestige. The photograph showcases intricate details that make this hall truly remarkable. From its carved wooden panelling to its impressive hammerbeam ceiling adorned with heraldry and armorial motifs - every aspect exudes medieval charm and craftsmanship. As one gazes upon this image captured by an unknown creator from Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes published by The Werner Company of Chicago in 1894 - it is impossible not to be transported back in time. The atmosphere inside is palpable; one can almost hear echoes of past conversations and witness historic figures mingling amidst the flickering light from the grand fireplace. Edinburgh Castle continues to be a cherished tourist attraction today due to its rich heritage and stunning architecture. This print serves as a reminder that even after centuries have passed since its construction began under David I's reign in the 12th century until it ceased being a royal residence after the Union of Crowns in 1603 - Edinburgh Castle remains an iconic symbol representing Scotland's proud past.
