German battery attack from the beach at Eckernforde, 5 April 1849, (1936). Deutsche Strandbatterien Bei Eckernforde, 5 April 1849. During the First War of Schleswig, the Danish ships Christian VIII and the frigate Gefion tried to land in Eckernforde on the Baltic coast of Germany. They were attacked by cannon fire from the shore. The Christian VIII exploded, while the Gefion surrendered and was captured.
