The bridegroom was the eldest son of King Christian X of Denmark and the bride was the only daughter of Crown Prince Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden and Princess Margaret of Connaught.

On 14 January 1892, the family circle was broken by the death of Albert, Duke of Clarence of influenza, complicated with pneumonia, eldest son of Prince of Wales later King Edward VII, and Alexandra of Denmark, Prince George succeeded his brother as second in direct line of succession to the throne. The childrens mothers, Alexandra (later Queen) and Dagmar (the Empress Maria Feoderovna) were sisters and so the children saw each other regularly
