3037356 The Storming of Schinss, Jan 3rd 1810, engraved by I. Clark, 1810 (coloured aquatint) by Temple, R. (fl.1809-10) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: 65th (2nd Yorkshire, North Riding) Regiment of Foot published by W Haines, 1813. In 1809 the Bombay Presidency organized an expedition the Persian Gulf to suppress piracy. The fortress of the Schinss [sic] surrendered after a heavy, night long bombardment. Between 1793 and 1815 Britain was almost constantly at war with France. The ships, sailors and soldiers needed to safeguard trade were in short supply, so the activities of pirates grew. For example, Arabian pirates often attacked merchant shipping in the Persian Gulf. This led the Bombay Presidency to launch an attack on the pirate settlements there in late 1809. As well as Presidency troops, the 47th and 65th Regiments of Foot played an important role. Two more joint Army-Navy campaigns against Gulf pirates followed in 1819 and 1821. ); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Storming of Schinss, Jan 3rd 1810" is a captivating print that depicts a significant event in history. Engraved by I. Clark in 1810, this coloured aquatint showcases the bravery and determination of the soldiers involved in the storming of Schinss fortress. The image transports us back to a time when Britain was constantly at war with France between 1793 and 1815. With limited resources available to safeguard trade routes, piracy became rampant, particularly in the Persian Gulf where Arabian pirates attacked merchant ships. In response to this threat, the Bombay Presidency organized an expedition to suppress piracy in late 1809. The fortress of Schinss surrendered after enduring a relentless bombardment throughout an entire night. This victory would not have been possible without the joint efforts of Presidency troops and two important regiments: the 47th and 65th Regiments of Foot. This historical event marked one of several campaigns against Gulf pirates during this era. Two more joint Army-Navy campaigns followed in subsequent years - one in 1819 and another in 1821. "The Storming of Schinss" serves as a powerful reminder of the courage exhibited by these soldiers who risked their lives to protect trade routes from pirate attacks. It stands as a testament to their unwavering dedication and commitment to preserving peace on treacherous seas.
