EDITORS COMMENTS
This drawing, titled "Expressions of Emotion (Hate or Jealousy, Anger, Desire, Physical Pain)" by A. J. Defehrt, dates back to the late 18th century, specifically from the Encyclopedie, published between 1762 and 1777. Defehrt, also known as A. J. de Fehrt or Aj Defehrt, was a skilled draftsman and anatomist, and this work is a testament to his expertise in both fields. The drawing features four female figures, each depicting a distinct emotion. The first figure on the left illustrates hate or jealousy, her face contorted in a scowl, her eyes narrowed and filled with malice. The second figure, representing anger, is shown with clenched fists, flushed cheeks, and an open mouth, ready to unleash a fiery response. Desire is depicted in the third figure, her eyes closed in ecstasy, her body language expressing a longing that is both passionate and intense. Lastly, the figure on the right illustrates physical pain, her face twisted in agony, her body curled up in a fetal position. Defehrt's attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the facial expressions and body language of each figure. The use of black and white, or b&w, adds to the drawing's timeless quality, making it a striking addition to any art collection. This work is a rare example of the artistic and scientific exploration of human emotions during the Enlightenment period. Antoine Claude Brasson and Laurent Durand, both notable figures in the field of anatomy, are believed to have collaborated with Defehrt on this project. The drawing is an etching with engraving on cream laid paper and is part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art, anatomy, or the exploration of human emotions.
