Dr. Atkinsons Frost-Bitten Hand, 5 July 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Dr. Atkinsons Frost-Bitten Hand, 5 July 1911, (1913). Frostbite-affected hand of Dr Edward Atkinson (1881-1929). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Dr. Atkinsons Frost-Bitten Hand, 5 July 1911" captures a haunting reminder of the perils faced by the brave explorers of the Terra Nova Expedition. In this image, we see the frostbite-affected hand of Dr. Edward Atkinson, one of the members of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated journey to the South Pole. The expedition, which took place from 1910 to 1913, was not only an ambitious quest to reach the geographic South Pole but also aimed to conduct significant scientific research in Antarctica. Led by Scott, a team comprising various experts embarked on this treacherous adventure. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring extreme hardships and battling against harsh weather conditions, Scott and his companions finally reached their destination—only to discover that they had been beaten by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition. Tragically, due to blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members lost their lives in late March. This poignant photograph serves as a testament to both the courage and sacrifice exhibited by these explorers in pursuit of knowledge and discovery. It is a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of Antarctica's icy landscape that claimed their lives. Preserved within "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , this image stands as a historical artifact capturing an important chapter in Antarctic exploration—a tale marked with triumphs overshadowed by heartbreaking tragedy.
