Burning of the town of Novitska, in the White Sea, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Burning of the town of Novitska, in the White Sea, 1854. Scene from the Crimean War: Royal Navy warships bombard a town in northern Russia. Operations of the White Sea Squadron...the English squadron in that distant region, has not been idle...The town of Novitska was burned to the ground on the 23rd July, by the steamers Brisk and Miranda...[View of the town] while it was in flames...they would not come to terms, so we manned and armed boats the next morning, and landed our marines and sailors to the left of the town, and proceeded up closer to the town with the gun-boats. They opened fire on us, but hurt no one. We soon silenced their guns, took the town, and burnt it to the ground'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting black and white image captures the aftermath of the bombardment and burning of the Russian town of Novitska, located on the White Sea, during the Crimean War in 1854. The scene is depicted with a sense of drama and destruction, as the town is engulfed in flames and smoke, with the Royal Navy warships HMS Brisk and Miranda anchored in the background. The caption from the "Illustrated London News" describes the events leading up to this moment, as the British squadron, in an effort to secure control of the region, attacked the town after its inhabitants refused to come to terms. The marines and sailors were landed, and despite resistance from the town's defenders, the British were able to take control and burn the town to the ground. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of war and the human cost of conflict.
