Out of the Bag!, 1871. Artist: Joseph Swain
Out of the Bag!, 1871. The cat is let out of the bag. The Conservative leader of the opposition, Mr Disraeli, suggests that perhaps the Conservative statesmen, represented here by Lord Butterfingers, should have left the matter to him. Lord Butterfingers is the high-born representative of a number of peers, including Lords Salisbury, Carnarvon and Sandon. The matter in question was the Social Alliance believed to have been made between these statesmen and a council of skilled workmen. A document was said to have been signed that aimed at improving the state of the working class. However, nothing seems to have come of the matter at this time. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 28, 1871. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector / Heritage-Images

EDITORS COMMENTS
Out of the Bag!, 1871" is a captivating political satire captured by artist Joseph Swain. In this intriguing print, we witness the release of a secret alliance between Conservative statesmen and skilled workmen, symbolized by the cat being let out of the bag. The central figure in this scene is Mr Disraeli, leader of the opposition and a prominent Conservative politician during Victorian times. Mr Disraeli suggests that Lord Butterfingers, representing several peers including Lords Salisbury, Carnarvon, and Sandon, should have entrusted him with handling this matter. The focus of their alliance was to improve conditions for the working class through signed documents; however, it appears that no significant progress has been made at present. This satirical engraving from Punch magazine on October 28th, 1871 provides us with an insight into political dynamics during the 19th century. It showcases how politicians maneuvered behind closed doors while attempting to address social reforms without much success. The black and white monochrome style adds depth to this historical piece while highlighting its timeless relevance. "Out of the Bag!, 1871" serves as a reminder that politics often involves hidden agendas and power struggles even in supposedly noble endeavors like improving society's welfare. With Benjamin Disraeli's presence as a key player in this artwork alongside renowned artists John Tenniel and Joseph Swain contributing their talents to its creation, this print stands as both an artistic masterpiece and an important commentary on Victorian politics.
