A Moulting Penguin, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
A Moulting Penguin, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "A Moulting Penguin, c1911" and captured by the talented artist Herbert Ponting in 1913, offers a glimpse into the final expedition of renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Embarking on the Terra Nova Expedition in 1910, Scott assembled a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Their mission was twofold: to continue their scientific research from Scott's previous Antarctic expedition and to be the first to reach the elusive South Pole. In this particular image frozen in time, we witness a penguin shedding its feathers during molting season. The delicate process symbolizes both vulnerability and resilience amidst harsh conditions that these remarkable creatures endure year after year. It serves as a poignant reminder of nature's ability to adapt and survive even in extreme environments. However bittersweet this photograph may be when viewed through the lens of history's tragic events that unfolded during this expedition; it is impossible not to appreciate Ponting's skillful composition and attention to detail. This single frame captures not only the beauty of Antarctica but also encapsulates the spirit of exploration that drove Captain Scott and his brave companions forward despite insurmountable odds. From Ponting's collection entitled "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II (published by Smith Elder & Co. , London), this print stands as a testament to human ambition intertwined with nature's wonders—a timeless tribute honoring those who dared venture into uncharted territories for knowledge and discovery.
