Honey bee head, SEM C013 / 4779

Honey bee head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a honey bee (Apis sp.). The compound eyes (dark) are either side of the antennae. Below these is the bees proboscis (feeding mouthpart). Bees use their proboscis to collect nectar from a wide range of flowering plants, bringing it back to their hive to store it and form honey. The honey is used as food by bee larva, and is also collected by beekeepers for human consumption. Magnification: x10 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a honey bee's head, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The vibrant colors bring to life the fascinating anatomy of this industrious insect. Positioned on either side of the antennae are the compound eyes, which appear dark and mesmerizing against the black background. Below them lies the proboscis, a specialized mouthpart that plays a crucial role in collecting nectar from various flowering plants. Bees utilize their proboscis to gather nectar, returning it to their hive where it is transformed into golden honey. This precious substance serves as nourishment for bee larvae and is also harvested by beekeepers for human consumption. The magnification level of x10 allows us to appreciate every minute detail when printed at 10 centimeters wide. Thomas Deerinck, an accomplished photographer, has skillfully captured this moment in nature's tapestry. His work not only highlights the beauty of these tiny creatures but also provides valuable insights into their biology and behavior. This image invites us to marvel at the wonders found within our natural world while reminding us of the vital role bees play in pollination and honey production.
