Carneades, Greek skeptic philosopher
Carneades (214 BCE - 129 BCE), Greek philosopher. Carneades was born in Cyrene in northern Africa but moved to Athens at an early age. He studied philosophy with the Stoics, notably Diogenes. He attached himself to the Academy, where he was influential in debating a skeptical viewpoint. He argued that all knowledge is impossible, apart from this knowledge itself. During a trip to Rome he angered the Senate by arguing that justice had no natural basis and existed solely to control populations. This engraving first appeared in The History of Philosophy by Thomas Stanley, published in London in 1656

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Greek skeptic philosopher, Carneades. Born in Cyrene, northern Africa, Carneades relocated to Athens at a young age to pursue his studies in philosophy under the guidance of Stoics like Diogenes. His association with the Academy allowed him to engage in influential debates that presented a skeptical perspective. Carneades boldly argued that all knowledge is unattainable except for knowledge about knowledge itself. This radical viewpoint challenged conventional wisdom and sparked intellectual discourse within philosophical circles. During a visit to Rome, he further stirred controversy by asserting that justice lacked any natural foundation and existed solely as a means of controlling populations. The engraving featured here was originally published in "The History of Philosophy" by Thomas Stanley in 1656, serving as an enduring testament to Carneades' impact on ancient thought. Capturing the essence of this esteemed Athenian scholar, Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully preserved this historical image for us to appreciate today. With its monochrome aesthetic and intricate details, this print transports viewers back to the 17th century when it was created. It offers an intriguing glimpse into the life and ideas of one of history's most influential skeptics – Carneades – whose philosophies continue to inspire critical thinking and challenge established beliefs even centuries later.
