Galen, 2nd century Greek physician

Galen (130-200 AD), Greek physician, coloured historical artwork. After Galens death, his body of work became a medical authority among Europeans, until his views on anatomy were overthrown by Vesalius (16th century) and those on physiology by Harvey (17th century). In Galens time, human dissection had fallen into disrepute, and so Galens anatomical assumptions, which were based on animals, were not always applicable to humans. He was the first to use the pulse as a diagnostic aid and the first to describe the flow of urine through the ureters to the bladder. Artwork from the 19th century book Vies des Savants Illustres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Galen, a prominent Greek physician from the 2nd century. Known for his extensive body of work, Galen's medical knowledge became highly regarded among Europeans after his passing. However, as time progressed and advancements in anatomy and physiology were made by Vesalius and Harvey respectively, some of Galen's assumptions were proven inaccurate. During Galen's era, human dissection had lost its credibility, leading him to base many of his anatomical theories on animal studies that did not always apply to humans. Despite these limitations, Galen made significant contributions to the field of medicine. He was the first to utilize pulse as a diagnostic tool and provided detailed descriptions of urine flow through the ureters into the bladder. This historical artwork from the 19th century book "Vies des Savants Illustres" offers a glimpse into Galen's classical world. The illustration portrays an adult male figure with distinct features typical of ancient Greece. The artist skillfully captures Galen's essence while incorporating vibrant colors that bring life to this antiquity-inspired piece. As we delve into this image, we are reminded of how far medical knowledge has evolved over centuries thanks to pioneers like Galen who laid the foundation for future breakthroughs in understanding human anatomy and physiology.
