Engraving of Denis Papin, French inventor
Denis Papin (1647-1712), French physicist and steam engine pioneer. Papin was an assistant to both Huygens and Boyle, moving to London in 1675. In 1679 he invented the steam digester (bottom left), an early type of autoclave or pressure cooker. He also designed steam engines. In his design shown here, the furnace and boiler (bottom centre) provided steam to a condenser (bottom right) that produced a partial vacuum to power a water pump (lower right). Papins designs were not successful as he could not machine his components well enough. Papin and Thomas Savery probably co-operated in the design of the latters successful steam engine

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an engraving of Denis Papin, a remarkable French inventor and physicist who left an indelible mark on the world of steam power. Born in 1647, Papin's genius was nurtured under the tutelage of esteemed scientists Huygens and Boyle before he made his way to London in 1675. It was here that he unveiled his groundbreaking creation - the steam digester, depicted at the bottom left corner of this illustration. Functioning as an early version of today's autoclave or pressure cooker, Papin's invention revolutionized cooking techniques by utilizing steam to enhance food preparation. However, it is his contribution to steam engines that truly solidifies his place in history. The intricately designed apparatus showcased here demonstrates how Papin ingeniously harnessed the power of steam through a furnace and boiler (bottom center), which then produced a partial vacuum via a condenser (bottom right). This vacuum effectively powered a water pump (lower right) with exceptional efficiency. Despite encountering challenges due to limitations in machining components accurately enough for success, Papin's collaboration with Thomas Savery undoubtedly influenced the latter's triumphs with their joint efforts resulting in a successful steam engine design. Through this colored illustration from Science Photo Library, we are transported back to witness one man's unwavering determination and pioneering spirit that forever altered our understanding and utilization of steam power. Denis Papin remains an inspiration for inventors and engineers alike as we continue pushing boundaries towards new frontiers.
