Ducks and bird flu virus particles
Ducks and avian influenza virus particles, composite image. The virus particles (brown) have been imaged using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Avian influenza (bird flu) is a disease of wild birds, which are usually resistant, that can spread to domestic birds, for whom it is almost invariably fatal. Humans can contract the disease through close contact with birds and their droppings. A new strain, H5N1, was found in Southeast Asia in the late 1990s, and has since killed over 100 people. There are fears it may mutate to a form capable of spreading from human to human, which could cause a devastating pandemic

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a composite image of ducks and avian influenza virus particles, providing a striking visual representation of the complex relationship between these creatures and the disease. The brown-colored virus particles, captured using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), highlight the microscopic nature of this pathogen. Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, primarily affects wild birds that typically possess resistance against its fatal consequences. However, it can spread to domestic birds with devastating outcomes. For humans, contracting this disease is possible through close contact with infected birds and their droppings. The late 1990s witnessed the emergence of a new strain called H5N1 in Southeast Asia. Since then, it has claimed over 100 lives and raised concerns about potential mutations that could enable human-to-human transmission—a scenario that could trigger an unprecedented pandemic. In this photograph's composition, we observe ducks within cages—symbolizing both wildlife and poultry settings—underscoring the vulnerability of various species to avian influenza. The vivid colors add depth to our understanding of this medical condition affecting livestock while emphasizing its significance in epidemiology and virology research. Science Photo Library presents this thought-provoking image not only as an artistic portrayal but also as a scientific tool for studying pathogens at such minute scales. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by researchers worldwide to combat infectious diseases like bird flu in our ever-evolving 21st-century landscape.
