EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Silver Tetradrachm from ancient Egypt, featuring the diademed head of Ptolemy I on the obverse. With his gaze fixed to the right, this powerful ruler exudes authority and wisdom. On the reverse side, an eagle with its wings furled struts confidently towards the left, symbolizing strength and dominance. The inscription "King Ptolemaios" in Greek lettering further emphasizes the significance of this coin as a representation of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Established in 305 BC by Ptolemy I Soter, a former General under Alexander the Great, this kingdom held vast territories with Alexandria serving as its grand capital city. As we admire this remarkable artifact from Cornwall's prestigious museum collection, it is fascinating to delve into its historical context. The minted silver coinage not only served as a medium of exchange but also conveyed political power and cultural identity during that era. It is worth noting that despite being part of an extensive numismatic collection at Royal Cornwall Museum, this photograph does not represent any commercial use. Instead, it invites us to appreciate and learn from our rich ancient past through objects like these coins – tangible links to civilizations long gone. Photo credit: MIke Searle
