The Mumbles lifeboat William Gammon returned to Swansea yesterday after an £
The Mumbles lifeboat William Gammon returned to Swansea yesterday after an £ 8000 engine refit at the Cowes yard where she was built 21 years ago.
Two new 60 h.p. engines were installed to replace the two 45 h.p. units and coxswain Derek Scott said last night that it will give the lifeboat more power and a little more speed.
The lifeboat has been away undergoing the refit since last December and her place was taken by the reserve boat Cunard which is now scheduled for relief work in North Wales.

The Mumbles lifeboat William Gammon returns to Swansea after an £8000 engine refit at the Cowes yard where she was originally built 21 years ago. The photo captures the proud moment as the refurbished lifeboat sails back into port, showcasing its new and improved features. After months of undergoing repairs since last December, two powerful 60 h. p. engines have replaced the previous 45 h. p. units, providing the lifeboat with increased power and a touch more speed. Coxswain Derek Scott expresses his satisfaction with these upgrades, confident that they will enhance their rescue capabilities. During her absence, the reserve boat Cunard stepped in to fulfill relief duties in North Wales. Now that William Gammon has returned stronger than ever, Cunard is ready to resume her regular operations. This snapshot from October 10th, 1968 not only commemorates a significant milestone for this vital emergency service craft but also highlights the dedication of charities and organizations involved in maritime rescue efforts like RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution). The image serves as a reminder of the crucial role played by lifeboats and their brave crews who risk their lives daily to save others at sea. It symbolizes hope and reassurance for those who rely on these vessels during times of distress.
