EDITORS COMMENTS
This image of Planet Earth, as depicted by the medieval philosopher and theologian Cosmas Indicopleustes in the 6th century, offers a unique and intriguing perspective of our world and the cosmos beyond. In Cosmas' vision, the heavens were enclosed by solid walls, with a transparent firmament separating the terrestrial realm from the celestial one. Above the firmament, there was a vast reservoir of waters, and above that, the Empyrean vault, the dwelling place of God. The sun and other celestial bodies were believed to be affixed to a series of crystal spheres that rotated around the Earth. The mountains and other natural phenomena were thought to be part of the terrestrial sphere, which was flat and circular in shape. This historical and primitive representation of the cosmos reflects the early understanding of the natural world and the role of humanity within it. Cosmas' perception of the heavens as an arched structure, with walls on either side, was a common belief during that time and is a fascinating glimpse into the intellectual and cultural context of the ancient world. The image invites us to reflect on the ever-evolving nature of human understanding and the ways in which our perception of the universe has changed throughout history. It also serves as a reminder of the power of the human imagination and the enduring allure of the mysteries of the cosmos.
