EDITORS COMMENTS
This slide depicts a vibrant street scene in the historic city of Port Royal, Jamaica, circa 1935. Port Royal, located at the end of the Palisadoes and the mouth of Kingston Harbour in south-eastern Jamaica, was founded in 1518 and served as the center of shipping commerce in the Caribbean Sea during the latter half of the 17th century. The city's strategic position made it a thriving hub for maritime activities, attracting merchants and pirates alike. However, Port Royal's fortune was short-lived. In 1692, a devastating earthquake struck the city, followed by subsequent fires, hurricanes, and flooding, which left the city in ruins. Despite these calamities, Port Royal was rebuilt and continued to play an important role in the region's history until another earthquake in 1907. This photograph captures the essence of Jamaican life in the 1930s, with locals going about their daily business, children playing in the streets, and the warm Caribbean sun casting long shadows. The lantern in the foreground adds a sense of mystery and intrigue, while the colorful buildings and lush greenery showcase the natural beauty of the island. Jamaica, an official Commonwealth nation, is an island located in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean Sea, south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola. This slide, part of the Boswell Collection, is a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and culture of this beautiful island nation.
