EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard, dated circa 1912, commemorates the Italo-Turkish War and the Italian occupation of Tripoli in 1911. The image showcases a detailed map of the Tripolitanian region, highlighting the key cities of Bengasi, Mursuk, Ghat, Derna, and Tripoli, all now under Italian control. The Ottoman Empire's territorial losses are evident as Italy's flag proudly flies over Tripoli, the former capital of the Ottoman province. The Italo-Turkish War, also known as the Tripolitanian War, was a conflict between the Italian Regio Esercito and the Ottoman Beylik of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica. The war began on October 27, 1911, when the Italian Royal Navy bombarded the Ottoman fortresses in Tripoli, marking the start of the Italian invasion. The Italian forces, led by General Rodolfo Graziani, successfully captured Tripoli on January 23, 1912, and the rest of the region soon followed. The postcard serves as a poignant reminder of the era's colonial ambitions and the shifting political landscape of North Africa. The Italian government and people celebrated the victory, with this postcard being a testament to the nationalistic fervor and patriotism that fueled the invasion. The Italo-Turkish War marked the beginning of Italian rule in Libya, which would last until 1943. The map on this postcard is a visual representation of the territorial gains made during this conflict, a significant moment in both Italian and Libyan history.
