EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the raw power and determination of the British military during the First World War, as two 60-pounder guns are positioned at Gallipoli in 1915. The Dardanelles Campaign, also known as the Gallipoli War, was a major military operation launched by the Allies in an attempt to secure a sea route to Russia and relieve the pressure on the Eastern Front. The 60-pounder gun, a formidable weapon of the time, was a key component of the British artillery arsenal. Weighing over 7 tons, it could fire a 60-pound shell up to 7,000 yards, making it an effective weapon against enemy fortifications and ships. In this image, the guns are prepared for action, with their crews in position, ready to provide covering fire for the advancing troops. The rugged terrain of Gallipoli, with its rocky cliffs and steep slopes, presents a challenging backdrop to the scene. The guns are perched precariously on the edge of a cliff, with the sea and Turkish coastline visible in the distance. The harsh conditions and difficult terrain made the campaign a brutal and costly one for both sides, with heavy casualties and little progress made towards achieving the Allied objectives. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the First World War, and the crucial role that artillery played in the conflict. The image captures the raw power and determination of the British military, as they faced the challenges of the Gallipoli Campaign with courage and resilience.
