EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Fulham toll booth, situated on the Fulham side of the Old Putney Bridge in Greater London. The toll house, depicted in this image, served as a vital link between Fulham and Putney across the majestic River Thames. In stark contrast to its more modest counterpart on the Putney side, this toll house stands proudly with two diligent toll collectors visible within its walls. Dating back to 1729 and also known as Fulham Bridge, this iconic structure had witnessed centuries of bustling activity before work began on a replacement bridge in 1880. It is believed that William O Field captured this photograph around that time when significant changes were taking place. Shortly after completion of the new crossing in 1886, both the old bridge and its accompanying toll house met their demise. The image not only showcases architectural beauty but also offers a glimpse into Victorian-era employment and transport practices. The individuals posed within highlight how jobs were intricately woven into everyday life during that period. Preserved by Historic England, this remarkable print transports us back to an era where tolls played a crucial role in facilitating travel across rivers while serving as reminders of our rich heritage.
