Scenes on the North Branch of the Susquehanna, 1874. Creator: James H. Richardson

Scenes on the North Branch of the Susquehanna, 1874....the furnace on Hunlocks Creek, Nanticoke ferry, Danville, the hemlock-gatherers,
the stone-quarry, etc. Tree-felling, logging, quarrying and mining along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania, USA....the prevailing industry is mining, all the mountains here containing iron-ore. There is some considerable difficulty in floating down logs to the main stream of the Susquehanna below Clearfield, and most of the timber cut is used for the purpose of smelting or for forges, where the charcoal hammered iron is made...we come to a rough, irregular stone structure, black as ink, and surrounded by rudely-arranged scaffolding of a peculiar form. This is a coal-mine, or rather all that can be seen externally of it. Of iron-furnaces there are many, and of rolling-mills more than a few. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Scenes on the North Branch of the Susquehanna, 1874" takes us back in time to witness the bustling industrial landscape along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania, USA. The creator of this remarkable piece is James H. Richardson. As we delve into this image, our eyes are immediately drawn to a towering furnace on Hunlocks Creek, emanating billows of smoke that testify to its active operation. Our gaze then shifts towards Nanticoke ferry and Danville, where life unfolds amidst an intricate web of tree-felling, logging, quarrying, and mining activities. The prevailing industry here is mining since these mountains are rich with iron-ore deposits. However, transporting logs downstream poses challenges due to Clearfield's location further down the river. Consequently, most timber harvested serves as fuel for smelting or forging purposes in local charcoal hammered iron production. Amidst this industrious scene emerges a striking sight - a rough stone structure shrouded in darkness and encircled by peculiarly arranged scaffolding. This mysterious edifice turns out to be a coal-mine when examined closely; it represents just a fraction of what lies beneath the surface. Iron-furnaces dotting the landscape and rolling-mills scattered throughout further attest to the region's thriving metalworking industry. This evocative photograph offers us glimpses into an era defined by relentless progress and human ingenuity. Captured within William Cullen Bryant's renowned publication "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" this visual masterpiece by James H. Richardson immortalizes an important chapter in American history – one marked by exploration and exploitation of natural resources for economic growth and development.
