Corridor of the Great Hunt (mosaic)

3961220 Corridor of the Great Hunt (mosaic) by Roman, (4th century AD); Villa Romana del Casale, Piazza Armerina, Sicily, Italy; (add.info.: Piazza Armerina, Roman Villa of Casale, which was probably an imperial urban palace. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Detail of the floor mosaic in the corridor of the Great Hunt. In spite of the name with which it is known (The Great Hunt), the subject of the floor mosaic represents a great capture. It does not represent hunting. Wild beasts are captured for the games in the amphitheatres of the Roman Empire: no animal is in fact shot down and hunters use only weapons to defend themselves.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and awe-inspiring "Corridor of the Great Hunt" mosaic, created by Roman artists in the 4th century AD. Located in the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, Sicily, this site is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Contrary to its name, this mosaic does not depict hunting but rather captures wild beasts for entertainment purposes in the amphitheatres of ancient Rome. The attention to detail is remarkable as every animal appears lifelike and dynamic. It is fascinating to note that no animals were harmed during these games; instead, hunters used their weapons solely for self-defense. The vibrant colors and meticulous craftsmanship of this floor mosaic are truly mesmerizing. Each tile tells a story of strength, bravery, and survival within an imperial urban palace setting. This particular photograph beautifully highlights a section of the corridor where one can appreciate both individual animal portraits and scenes depicting their capture. Ghigo Roli's skillful photography perfectly captures the essence of this historical masterpiece. As you gaze upon this image, you cannot help but be transported back in time to witness firsthand the grandeur and spectacle that once unfolded within these walls. A true testament to human creativity and ingenuity, this artwork continues to inspire awe and admiration centuries later.
