The Apocalypse, title page, 1511 (woodcut)

741849 The Apocalypse, title page, 1511 (woodcut) by DAorer or Duerer, Albrecht (1471-1528); 38.2x26.4 cm; Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, UK; (add.info.: Title-page to the 1511 Latin edition of the Apocalypse with the beginning of the letterpress text (Incipit Prologus...) on the reverse. For this edition DAorer added the woodcut image of the Virgin and Saint John to the calligraphic title of the 1498 Latin edition, so that it matched DAorers two other large books issued at the same time, The Large Passion and The Life of the Virgin. The saint is at work on his text with the eagle that was his only companion on Patmos, the island where he was exiled toward the end of his life. The title, which translates as Apocalypse with Figures, differs slightly from the title of the 1498 German edition which was called The Secret Revelation of John.); eFitzwilliam Museum; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Apocalypse, title page, 1511 (woodcut) by Albrecht Dürer is a captivating print that showcases the artist's mastery of both printmaking and calligraphy. This frontispiece serves as the title page for the 1511 Latin edition of the Apocalypse, also known as The Secret Revelation of John. In this intricate woodcut image, we see a glowing Virgin Mary and Saint John diligently working on their respective texts. Saint John is accompanied by his faithful companion, an eagle, symbolizing his exile on Patmos. The ornate crown atop Mary's head signifies her status as Queen of Heaven. Dürer added this woodcut to match two other large books he released simultaneously: The Large Passion and The Life of the Virgin. His attention to detail can be seen in every aspect of this composition - from the delicate calligraphic text on the reverse side to the crescent moon at Mary's feet representing her purity. This Northern Renaissance masterpiece not only captures religious symbolism but also showcases Dürer's technical skill in printmaking. Through his precise lines and shading techniques, he brings life to each figure depicted in this scene. The Apocalypse title page stands as a testament to Dürer's artistic genius and remains an important piece within art history.
