The image depicts two women, maids by profession, engaged in what seems to be an ordinary task - staining a dress with gasoline. However, unbeknownst to them, this seemingly harmless act would soon turn into a devastating disaster. As fate would have it, at the precise moment when one of the maids attempted to ignite the water heater, tragedy struck. A sudden blaze erupted from the ignited gasoline and engulfed both women and their surroundings in flames. With great difficulty and heroic efforts from others present at the scene, they were pulled away from certain death. Sadly though, despite their rescue from the inferno's clutches, one of these unfortunate souls succumbed to her injuries shortly after. The intensity and drama captured within this illustration for Courier Sunday on October 11th 1931 is truly haunting.
