The Heroic Charlotte La Corday

The Heroic Charlotte La Corday, Upon Her Trial, At The Bar Of The Revolutionary Tribunal Of Paris, July 17, 1793, Gillray, James, 1756-1815, Artist, Engraving, Charlotte Corday Standing Before The Judges Of The Revolutionary Tribunal With The Body Of Marat Which Lying Between Them. She Responds To The Tribunal, Wretches, I Did Not Expect To Appear Before You - I Always Thought That I Should Be Delivered Up To The Rage Of The People, Torn In Pieces, & That My Head, Stuck On The Top Of A Pike, Would Have Preceded Marat On His State Bed, To Serve As A Rallying Point To Frenchmen, If There Still Are Any Worthy Of That Name. But, Happen What Will, If I Have The Honours Of The Guillotine, & My Clay-cold Remains Are Buried, They Will Soon Have Conferred Upon Them The Honours Of The Pantheon; And My Memory Will Be More Honoured In France Than That Of Judith In Bethulia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage engraving, titled "The Heroic Charlotte La Corday" captures a pivotal moment in history during the trial of Charlotte Corday at the Revolutionary Tribunal of Paris on July 17,1793. The artwork by James Gillray depicts Corday standing before the judges with the lifeless body of Marat lying between them. In her response to the tribunal, Corday expresses her unexpected presence and reveals her belief that she would have been torn apart by an enraged mob rather than facing this trial. She speaks of her anticipation for being executed and having her head displayed on a pike alongside Marat's body as a symbol for Frenchmen who still hold true to their values. Despite these grim thoughts, Corday acknowledges that if she is honored with death by guillotine and buried, her remains will eventually receive recognition in France's prestigious Pantheon. She believes that her memory will be revered more than Judith's in Bethulia. This historic artwork evokes nostalgia for a time long past and showcases traditional illustrative techniques. With its aged appearance and retro style, it transports us back to an era where heroism was defined through sacrifice and conviction. Through this engraved image, we are reminded of the courage exhibited by individuals like Charlotte La Corday during one of France's most tumultuous periods in history.
