This print captures a poignant domestic scene from the 19th century. The Rev. and Mrs Crawley, an impoverished parson, are depicted alongside their young family in this moving illustration by renowned English artist John Everett Millais. The founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood skillfully brings to life Anthony Trollope's literary work, "Framley Parsonage" which was serialized in The Cornhill Magazine in London back in 1860. In this engraving, we witness the struggles faced by the humble Anglican cleric as he grapples with supporting his growing family. With a touch of defeat and humiliation on his face, Rev. Crawley stands beside his wife who tenderly cradles their baby while surrounded by their other children. This Christian household is portrayed with great attention to detail - from the toys scattered around to a doll resting near one of the little ones. Millais' artistry beautifully captures both the challenges and resilience found within religious families during that era.
