USS Shenandoah, 1920s C016 / 4325

USS Shenandoah at her mooring mast in Tacoma, Washington State, USA. This US Navy rigid airship was built from 1922 to 1923, and operated until it crashed in 1925. Its 1924 flight from New Jersey to Washington State was the first sighting of a rigid airship for many in the USA. The USS Shenandoah (also called the ZR-1) was 207 metres long, with its structure built from duraluminium with a cloth cotton cover. The gas used for lift was helium, rather than hydrogen. It carried a crew of 25, had a range of 8000 kilometres, and was armed with machine guns and bombs. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the majestic USS Shenandoah, an iconic symbol of American military aviation in the 1920s. Moored at her mast in Tacoma, Washington State, this US Navy rigid airship stands tall against the backdrop of a clear sky. The sight of this technological marvel must have been a sensation for both locals and tourists alike. The USS Shenandoah was constructed between 1922 and 1923, boasting an impressive length of 207 meters. Its innovative structure was built from duraluminium with a cloth cotton cover, ensuring durability and efficiency during flight. Unlike its predecessors, this airship relied on helium gas for lift instead of highly flammable hydrogen. With its range spanning over 8000 kilometers, the USS Shenandoah carried a crew of 25 individuals who operated machine guns and bombs as part of their military duties. This historic vessel played a significant role in shaping early aviation history by completing its groundbreaking journey from New Jersey to Washington State in 1924 - introducing many Americans to rigid airships for the first time. Preserved through time by the Bain News Service's glass negative collection, this print offers us a glimpse into an era when human ingenuity pushed boundaries in transportation technology. It serves as a reminder not only of our fascination with novelty but also our relentless pursuit to explore new frontiers in aviation advancement.
