Stroke, CT scan

Stroke. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the brain of a 58-year-old patient, showing the damage (purple) caused 24 hours after a cerebral infarction. A stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapid loss of brain function due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. A cerebral infarction is an ischemic stroke, whereby lack of blood flow occurs when a blood vessel that supplies a part of the brain becomes blocked, or leakage occurs outside the vessel walls. Here, the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) was affected, causing damage to the areas of the brain supplied by that artery and leading to total paralysis of the arm, leg, and trunk on the left side of the body

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the brain of a 58-year-old patient, revealing the aftermath of a cerebral infarction. The vibrant purple hues indicate the damage caused just 24 hours after this ischemic stroke occurred. A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), occurs when there is an abrupt disruption in blood supply to the brain, leading to rapid loss of brain function. In this case, it was the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) that suffered blockage or leakage outside its vessel walls. Consequently, areas of the brain supplied by this artery were severely affected, resulting in complete paralysis on the left side of the body - including arm, leg, and trunk. The image provides valuable insight into both biology and medicine as it highlights how disturbances within our circulatory system can have devastating consequences for our neurological health. By visualizing such abnormalities through diagnostic imaging techniques like CT scans, healthcare professionals gain crucial information for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. This photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of maintaining vascular health and understanding conditions like strokes that can significantly impact our lives at any age.
