Newtons optics

Newtons optics. Coloured artwork of the English physicist Isaac Newton (1642-1727) conducting his famous experiment on light. He is using a prism to refract a ray of light from a hole in the shutters over a window. A white surface (far left) allowed Newton to observe that light splits into the different colours (spectrum) observed in rainbows. Newton failed to further split the colours, but later he remixed the colours using a lens and prism. Newton carried out this experiment while at Cambridge University, but the results were not known until he published the book Opticks in 1704. Newton is also famous for his general theory of gravitation, and for his mathematical discoveries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the iconic moment when Isaac Newton, the brilliant English physicist, conducted his groundbreaking experiment on light. In this colored illustration, we see Newton engrossed in his research at Cambridge University during the 17th century. With a prism in hand, he skillfully refracts a ray of light through a hole in the shutters over a window. The white surface to his left allows him to witness firsthand how light splits into its various colors, forming the beautiful spectrum observed in rainbows. Although Newton was unable to further divide these colors at that time, he later succeeded by remixing them using a lens and prism. This significant discovery would be revealed to the world through his renowned book Opticks published in 1704. Newton's contributions extend far beyond optics; he is also celebrated for formulating the general theory of gravitation and making remarkable mathematical discoveries. As an observer of nature and an analytical thinker, Newton's experiments revolutionized our understanding of physics. Sheila Terry's artwork not only pays homage to this pivotal moment but also highlights Newton's amazement as he delves into uncharted scientific territory. Through her skilled brushstrokes and attention to detail, she transports us back in time to witness one of history's most influential scientists unraveling the mysteries of light and color.
