Marine fuel analysis
Marine fuel analysis. Industrial researcher carrying out a calibration test on a hydrogen sulphide (H2S) analysis machine (vapour phase processor, VPP). This apparatus is being used to test marine fuel for levels of H2S, a contaminant that is required by law to be reduced to safe levels. If this is not done, both for fossil fuels in general, but marine fuels in particular, then marine fuels stored on ships can give off lethal levels of this toxic gas. The legal limit for H2S in marine fuel since July 2012 has been 2 parts per million (ppm). This device is from UK company Stanhope Seta, based in Chertsey, Surrey. Photographed in 2012

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness an industrial researcher diligently conducting a calibration test on a hydrogen sulphide (H2S) analysis machine. The vapour phase processor (VPP), manufactured by UK company Stanhope Seta, is specifically designed to analyze marine fuel for levels of H2S - a hazardous contaminant that must be reduced to safe quantities as mandated by law. The significance of this process cannot be overstated, as failure to eliminate excessive H2S from marine fuels can lead to the release of lethal amounts of toxic gas when stored on ships. Since July 2012, the legal limit for H2S in marine fuel has been set at 2 parts per million (ppm), emphasizing the critical importance of accurate analysis and reduction. As our dedicated engineer meticulously operates the apparatus in his laboratory located in Chertsey, Surrey, he exemplifies the commitment towards safety and compliance within the maritime industry. His expertise and attention to detail ensure that marine fuels meet stringent standards before they are utilized onboard vessels. This photograph not only showcases cutting-edge technology but also serves as a reminder of how advancements in analytical instruments contribute significantly to safeguarding lives and protecting our environment. It symbolizes the crucial role played by individuals like our researcher who work tirelessly behind-the-scenes to ensure that every drop of marine fuel meets specifications outlined by international standards such as ISO 8217:2010. Captured in 2012 by Science Photo Library's talented photographer Alex Gardner, this image encapsulates both scientific precision and human dedication towards maintaining safety within the petroleum industry.
