Pictographs and linear script symbols

Pictographs and linear script symbols. The British archaeologist Arthur Evans (1851-1941) found thousands of clay tablets dating from the second millennium BC at Knossos, Crete, but denied other scholars access as he wished to translate them himself. In this table he compared hieroglyphic signs and Aegean Linear and Cypriote and Semitic scripts. Linear A has not yet been translated, but British scholar Michael Ventris (1922-1956) translated Linear B in the 1950s and found it was based on Greek, overturning Evanss view of Minoan history. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a table filled with pictographs and linear script symbols, shedding light on the fascinating world of ancient languages. The renowned British archaeologist Arthur Evans made an extraordinary discovery at Knossos, Crete - thousands of clay tablets dating back to the second millennium BC. However, he chose to keep these treasures hidden from other scholars as he desired to translate them himself. In this particular table captured in the photograph, Evans compared hieroglyphic signs with Aegean Linear and Cypriote scripts alongside Semitic scripts. It is worth noting that while Linear A remains untranslated to this day, another brilliant British scholar named Michael Ventris achieved a groundbreaking feat in the 1950s by translating Linear B. His work revealed that it was based on Greek, completely overturning Evans's theory about Minoan history. The image provides us with a glimpse into Edward Clodd's book "The Story of the Alphabet" published in 1900. It serves as a testament to the intricate connection between pictographs and linear scripts throughout history. This mesmerizing artwork not only delves into linguistic studies but also highlights the significance of early writing systems and their impact on our understanding of ancient civilizations. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this historical tableau for all enthusiasts of classical art, language, and archaeology to appreciate its profound beauty and educational value.
