Excavation of mammoth bones
Excavation of mammoth bones, Siberia. String has been used to create a grid to allow accurate identification of the location of each bone. This will allow later reconstruction of the site so that the bones can be correctly placed together to reconstruct the mammoth skeletons. The bones have been found preserved in the Siberian permafrost layer (the layer of permanently frozen soil). The mammoth was an elephant-like mammal that inhabited northern regions of the world and became extinct only a few thousand years ago. Thousands of mammoth remains have been discovered in the permafrost in Siberia, Russia. Photographed near Volchya Griva, in September 1970

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library takes us back to September 1970 in Siberia, Russia. The image showcases the meticulous excavation of mammoth bones near Volchya Griva, revealing a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life. To ensure accurate identification and later reconstruction of the site, a grid made of string has been ingeniously created. This allows each bone to be precisely located within its quadrant, enabling scientists to piece together the mammoth skeletons with precision. The discovery of these well-preserved remains in the Siberian permafrost layer is truly remarkable. Mammoths, elephant-like mammals that roamed northern regions until their extinction just a few thousand years ago, have left behind thousands of fossils in this frozen terrain. As we delve deeper into the world of paleontology and biology, these findings shed light on our planet's ancient past. The photograph captures an autumn scene against the cold backdrop of Siberia's arctic tundra. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and scientific exploration as researchers meticulously uncover each bone buried beneath layers of frozen soil. The presence of mammoth tusks adds further intrigue to this archaeological endeavor. Science Photo Library brings us yet another extraordinary snapshot from history – one that invites us to marvel at Earth's biological wonders while igniting our imagination about what else lies hidden beneath nature's icy embrace.
