Emperor penguin chicks huddling

Emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) chicks huddling for warmth in the Antarctic spring. These grey-feathered chicks are about one month old. The adults feed them by regurgitating fish. These are the only penguins to breed in the Antarctic during the winter. Each pair produces a single egg, which the males incubate on their feet, surviving the extreme cold by huddling in large groups. Males fast during the two month incubation period and lose almost half their body mass by the end. The emperor is the largest penguin, standing around 115 centimetres tall and weighing 30 to 40 kilograms. Photographed in September at Dawson-Lambton Glacier, Antarctica

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heartwarming sight of Emperor penguin chicks huddling together for warmth in the Antarctic spring. These adorable grey-feathered youngsters, only about a month old, rely on their parents to provide sustenance by regurgitating fish. Remarkably, these magnificent creatures are the sole penguins that brave the harsh Antarctic winter to breed. During this challenging period, each pair produces just one precious egg, which is diligently incubated by the males on their feet. To survive the extreme cold, they form large groups and huddle closely together. The devoted fathers fast for two months while incubating and lose nearly half of their body weight by the end. Emperor penguins hold an impressive title as both the largest and tallest species of penguin, standing at around 115 centimeters tall and weighing between 30 to 40 kilograms. This photograph was taken in September at Dawson-Lambton Glacier in Antarctica—a testament to these resilient birds' ability to thrive amidst icy conditions. The image showcases not only a stunning display of nature's beauty but also highlights important aspects of zoology and marine life. It offers a glimpse into an emperor penguin colony functioning as a nursery for its juveniles while emphasizing their carnivorous diet as piscivores or fish eaters. Science Photo Library presents this extraordinary snapshot from Brunt Ice Shelf's oceanic realm—an awe-inspiring reminder of how these flightless birds adapt through thermo-regulation techniques during reproduction in one of Earth's most inhospitable environments.
