Christian Wolff, German philosopher

Christian Wolff (1679-1754), German philosopher. Wolff was born at Breslau in Silesia. He studied mathematics, physics and natural philosophy at the University of Jena, where he graduated in 1703, and in 1706 was appointed a professor at Halle in Prussia. A friend of Liebnitz, Wolff was a champion of rationalism, a stance which was at odds with the Pietism of Lutheran dogmatism expected of philosophers. It was implied that his stance meant that a soldier could desert without impunity simply by claiming that such an act was predetermined and thus unavoidable. Wolff was expelled from Prussia by King Frederick William I but found new employment in Marburg in Hesse-Kassel. He was immensely popular as a teacher. When Frederick the Great ascended the throne in Prussia he invited Wolff to return, which he did in triumph. This engraving is from an edition of Wolffs Jus Gentium

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Christian Wolff, a renowned German philosopher whose intellectual contributions left an indelible mark on the world of rationalism and philosophy. Born in Breslau, Silesia in 1679, Wolff's thirst for knowledge led him to study mathematics, physics, and natural philosophy at the esteemed University of Jena. Intriguingly, Wolff's philosophical stance clashed with the prevailing Pietism of Lutheran dogmatism during his time. His unwavering support for rationalism challenged societal norms and even suggested that predetermined actions could absolve soldiers from desertion charges. Despite facing expulsion from Prussia by King Frederick William I due to his unorthodox beliefs, Wolff found solace in Marburg, Hesse-Kassel where he continued to inspire countless students as a revered teacher. However, destiny had more surprises in store for this exceptional thinker. When Frederick the Great ascended the throne in Prussia, he extended an invitation to Wolff that was met with resounding triumph upon his return. This engraving captures not only the essence of a man dedicated to reason and rationality but also serves as a testament to his resilience and enduring legacy. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this momentous figure through their lens - presenting us with an exquisite monochromatic engraving that transports us back into history. As we gaze upon this vertical portrait of Christian Wolff, we are reminded of his profound impact on German philosophy during the 17th and 18th centuries; forever etching his name among great thinkers who dared challenge conventionality.
