Soap architects at Port Sunlight. Uniformed guides take visitors around the great soap

Soap architects at Port Sunlight. Uniformed guides take visitors around the great soap works of Messrs Lever Brothers Ltd, and from special galleries they can see soap being made by the thousands of ton.
In the pan rooms thousands of tons are mixed and boiled each week. The liquid soap is run down to the cooling room, where in steel boxes it solidifies, to form great blocks.
Machines with taut wires cut the blocks into slabs and then again into bars.
Stacks of these bars are built up until the soap is dry. 8th April 1928

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Memory Lane Prints takes us back to the bustling soap works of Messrs Lever Brothers Ltd in Port Sunlight, England. The image showcases a group of uniformed guides leading visitors through the magnificent soap production facility. As they explore, these lucky guests are treated to an up-close view of soap being made on a massive scale. In the pan rooms, where thousands of tons are mixed and boiled each week, one can only imagine the aromatic scents that fill the air. From there, the liquid soap is carefully transported to the cooling room, where it solidifies into enormous steel boxes resembling blocks. The next step in this intricate process involves machines equipped with taut wires expertly slicing these colossal blocks into slabs and then further dividing them into individual bars. It's a mesmerizing sight to behold as stacks upon stacks of freshly cut bars begin to take shape. Finally, patience is required as these bars are delicately arranged until they dry completely. The resulting stacks create an impressive display that speaks volumes about the dedication and craftsmanship involved in producing such essential everyday items. Dating back to April 8th, 1928, this photograph offers us a glimpse into not just a bygone era but also highlights how industry and innovation shaped our world. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and the remarkable progress made within chemical manufacturing during that time period – all thanks to companies like Lever Brothers Ltd. , who left an indelible mark on Merseyside's industrial landscape.
