Mendeleyevs periodic table, 1869 Featured Print

Mendeleyevs periodic table, 1869

Mendeleyev's periodic table, 1869. Mendeleyev's periodic table of 1869. This is the first version of the periodic table drawn up by the Russian chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907). He left gaps in the table for new elements, that were indeed later discovered, vindicating his theory. This version has the elements listed using chemical symbols, and ordered by atomic weight, but the fully correct chemical arrangement has not yet emerged. The final version (1871) had the elements arranged in the familiar vertical columns or groups. This version is dated (lower left) to 17 February 1869, and Mendeleyev's name is at top. This manuscript is from the Mendeleyev museum. Photographed in St Petersburg, Russia. See also H413/297

Caffeine crystals, SEM Featured Print

Caffeine crystals, SEM

Caffeine crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of anhydrous caffeine crystals (1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine). They were produced by a process called sublimation. A liquid containing caffine, such as coffee, is frozen and heated to 238 degrees Celsius, causing the frozen liquid to vaporise without going through the liquid phase. The vapour is then condensed, which drives the water out and results in anhydrous crystals. Some of the crystals have symmetrically intergrown (upper centre, red and yellow). Caffine stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), increasing alertness and deferring fatigue. It occurs in coffee beans and tea leaves. Magnification: x400 at 10 centimetres high

Electron structure of helium atom Featured Print

Electron structure of helium atom

Electron density of a helium atom. This image represents the quantum cloud of electrons surrounding a helium atom. The colours represent the local electric charge density, essentially the probability that one might find one of the atom's four electrons at a given point. The colours run from blue (highest) to red (lowest). The chaotic appearance of the image is due to the presence of a nearby charged particle; when in equilibrium the atom would appear more symmetrical. This is a more appropriate image than the older ideas of fixed orbitals for electrons, sometimes referred to as the Bohr Model, and is due to the principles of modern quantum theory
