Mr. David Forbes - The Unexpected Mileage of a Rail Collector-Guard

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from December 12th, 1972, we catch a glimpse of Mr. David Forbes, an extraordinary rail collector-guard with an unexpected twist to his daily routine. While one might assume that his job entails minimal physical activity, Mr. Forbes defies expectations as he happily immerses his tired feet in water after a long day's work. Residing in Gouroch Square, Grimdon, Sunderland at the age of 39, Mr. Forbes embarked on the Newcastle-Middlesbrough run twice daily – covering an impressive distance of 189 miles each time! Curiosity got the better of him and he decided to wear a pedometer during one such journey. Astonishingly enough, despite operating just two cars on that particular day (a rather ordinary occurrence), our dedicated guard managed to walk a staggering total of 11 miles! This intriguing photograph captures more than just the smile on Mr. Forbes' face; it encapsulates dedication and determination within public transport services during the bustling era of the 1970s railways. With passengers boarding and tickets being checked diligently by uniformed guards like himself, it is evident that these unsung heroes played an integral role in ensuring smooth journeys for all. As we delve into Memory Lane Prints' collection once again, let us celebrate individuals like Mr. David Forbes who went above and beyond their expected duties while leaving lasting imprints on our
