Labour Party leader Michael Foot making his speech, which lasted 45 minutes

Labour Party leader Michael Foot making his speech, which lasted 45 minutes, at Central Methodist Hall, Coventry. He had an audience of 1, 200 people who listened to his condemnation of the Tories. He called them " Idealogical lunatics" and described the Employment Secretary as " The unspeakable Tebbit." But Mr Foot was generally in good humour, warming to the enthusiastic audience and to his basic themes of jobs and the welfare state. Sensing that Labour had at last touched a raw gevernment nerve, he again rammed home the attack on the health service. While the Tories hated the NHS and would run it down, he claimed, Labour would boost its budget by 3 per cent a year in real terms. On jobs, Mr Foot outlined how Labour would put £ 550 million into West Midlands industry within 12 months of taking power, and he gave a firm pledge to rescue and sustain the machine tool sector.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Labour Party leader Michael Foot captivates a crowd of 1,200 at Central Methodist Hall in Coventry with his fiery speech that lasted an impressive 45 minutes. With passion and conviction, he denounces the Tories as 'ideological lunatics' and boldly labels the Employment Secretary as 'The unspeakable Tebbit. ' Despite his strong words, Mr. Foot maintains a good-humored demeanor throughout, connecting with the enthusiastic audience on topics like jobs and the welfare state. In a calculated move to strike a chord with the public, Mr. Foot seizes upon their concerns about healthcare by launching a scathing attack on the Tories' intentions for the National Health Service (NHS). He promises that under Labour's leadership, NHS funding will increase by 3% annually in real terms while accusing their opponents of harboring disdain for this vital institution. Furthermore, Mr. Foot outlines Labour's commitment to bolstering West Midlands industry by injecting £550 million within just one year of assuming power. In addition to this economic pledge, he firmly assures support for sustaining the machine tool sector—a crucial aspect of British manufacturing. This photograph from May 31st, 1983 captures Michael Foot at his finest moment—energizing supporters with his powerful rhetoric and rallying cries for change. It serves as an enduring reminder of his dedication to championing social justice and galvanizing public sentiment against Conservative policies.
