EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Tzu-Hsi, the Dowager Empress of China, also known as Hsiao-Ch'in or the Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908). Born into the Manchu royalty in 1835, she rose to power as the empress consort of the Xianfeng Emperor in 1851 and became the de facto ruler of China following her husband's death in 1861. Tzu-Hsi's reign was marked by her resistance to Western influences and reforms, which were seen as threats to the traditional Chinese way of life. She is infamously associated with the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion and the Boxer Uprising, two major upheavals in late Qing Dynasty history. The Boxer Rebellion, which began in 1898, was a violent anti-foreign movement that targeted foreigners and Christians in China. Tzu-Hsi initially supported the Boxers, seeing them as a means to expel foreign influence. However, her involvement in the rebellion ultimately led to a devastating military intervention by the Eight-Nation Alliance, further weakening China's position in the world. Despite her controversial role in Chinese history, Tzu-Hsi remains a fascinating and complex figure. She was an accomplished artist, poet, and musician, and is said to have been deeply interested in Western technology and culture. Her reign marked the end of the imperial era in China and the beginning of the modern era. This photograph, taken during her later years, captures the regal presence and enigmatic persona of this remarkable woman who played a pivotal role in shaping China's history.
